MANILA, Philippines – In another sign of unrest within the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), a YouTube video showed a minister quitting his post in the middle of a church service as he defied the orders of the church’s central office.

The INC minister, identified on Youtube as Louie Cayabyab, refused to read circulars on the expulsion of the mother and brother of INC head Brother Eduardo Manalo.

He also rejected the circular expelling Isaias Samson Jr, a former minister and editor in chief of the INC’s official publication, Pasugo.

“I decided, brethren, that I won’t read those circulars. You might be asking, ‘Why?’ Because in my heart, in my heart of hearts, I can’t take it. It is just so so difficult to betray one’s heart,” the minister said.

“I know the repercussion of this, and I know what will be the consequence. I know that I will be stripped out of my duty. From now on, I will no longer be a minister. Probably I will be expelled from the church, but I will take it, brothers and sisters,” he added, as people in the background cried.

Still, he added, “We admonish you to remain in the church no matter what happens.”

The website described Louie Cayabyab as the leader of an INC temple in Maryland. Sher Lock, an anonymous Facebook user who claims insider information on the INC, posted this video on Facebook on Sunday, July 25.

Rappler is still trying to reach INC spokesman Brother Edwil Zabala for comment as of posting time.

This comes as the INC faces its worst crisis. In an unprecedented series of events, former ministers of the INC began to speak up against their church leaders.

‘Don’t cover up wrongdoing’

Samson, for one, dared INC’s spokesmen, Zabala and General Evangelist Bienvenido Santiago, to speak the truth about the alleged corruption in the INC. (READ: Expelled INC minister: Don’t cover up wrongdoing)

Earlier, Manalo’s mother Tenny and brother Angel released a Youtube videoexposing a supposed threat to their lives.

Angel eventually slammed corruption in the INC.

(The doctrine of the Iglesia ni Cristo is now damaged. In the same way that you looked up to us before, now you can see there are many anomalies. There are many acts of corruption in the Church. That’s what we want to avoid.)

Samson also blasted corruption within the INC.

Despite these, Zabala denied that the crisis is dividing the INC, a church known for its culture of unquestioning obedience.

He said the church remains united behind its leader. –

WATCH: Iglesia ni Cristo member held under ‘house arrest’: There were grenades, threats

Isaias Samson Jr., who once was editor in chief of Iglesia Ni Cristo’s Pasugo Magazine, says he was held under house arrest

MANILA, Philippines – For Isaias Samson Jr, the past week was the most terrifying of his life.

He says he was placed under house arrest last Thursday, July 16, for allegedly exposing the corruption happening within the Iglesia ni Cristo congregation.

“They said I was that Antonio Evangelista person who exposed the corruption in Iglesia,” he says. “But it wasn’t me.”

Iglesia ni Cristo head expels mother, brother

The Iglesia ni Cristo also denies the claims of Felix Nathaniel ‘Angel’ Manalo and his mother, Tenny, in a Youtube video

Katerina Francisco

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The head of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) decided to expel his own mother and brother from the powerful church after the two exposed a supposed death threat.

INC executive minister Eduardo Manalo made this decision after his brother, Felix Nathaniel “Angel” Manalo, and his mother, Tenny, said in a Youtube video that their lives “are in danger.”

INC General Evangelist Bienvenido Santiago announced the expulsion of Angel and Tenny in a news conference on Thursday, July 23.

(While this is painful for Brother Eduardo Manalo, they decided to expel those creating divisions in the Church. In the worship services of the Iglesia ni Cristo starting today, we will be announcing this to our brethren.)

Santiago also denied the claims of Angel and Tenny in the Youtube video. (READ:From rag-tag sect to influential wheeler-dealer)

Angel is the younger brother of Eduardo, the present executive minister of INC, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014 and will be commemorating their 101st on Monday, July 27.

Their father is Eraño “Erdy” Manalo, who died in August 2009 and was Iglesia’s former executive minister. (READ: Rappler’s 2014 infographic on the INC)

Angel Manalo says in the video, “Nananawagan po kami sa inyo dahil nanganganib po ang aming buhay. Sana’y matulungan niyo po kami.” (We are appealing to you because our lives are in danger. We hope that you can help us.)

He introduces his mother whose face is not seen in the video. Members of the Iglesia whom Rappler spoke with said it was indeed her voice.

Introducing herself as the widow of Ka Erdy Manalo who led the INC for 46 years, Tenny pleads, “Ako’y nananawagan sa aming mga kapatid sa Iglesia na tulungan ninyo kami dahil may panganib sa aming buhay. Saklolohan niyo ang aking mga anak, si Angel at Lottie at ang kanilang mga kasama. Tulungan niyo rin ang mga ministro na dinukot at hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa nakikita. Kaawaan natin sila at ang kanilang pamilya.”

(I am appealing to our brethren in the church to help us because there is a threat to our very lives. Please help my children, Angel and Lottie, and their companions. Let us also help the ministers who were taken and until now, have not yet been found. Let us show mercy to them and their families.) – with reports from Chay Hofilena/

Supreme Court vs. Magisterium

Retrieve from:

John 20:19-23 New International Version (NIV)

Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

“The key to Christian Unity, is to Trust the Holy Spirit to guide and protect the Magisterium of the Church (Supreme Court of the Church). Meaning, failure to a accept it as a rule of faith, shall mean, DISUNITY among Christians.”

Reasons to become a Catholic

Reasons to become a Catholic

1. The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church which has its head office at the Vatican is the only Church that was instituted by Jesus Christ.

2. In the 4th century, the Catholic Church, under the Divine guidance of the Holy Spirit, compiled a number of books, Gospels and letters of the Apostles to make up the Catholic Bible. About 1,000 year later, a number of man-made religions took the Catholic Bible and changed it according to their personal desires, most religions removing a number of Books from both, the Old and the New Testaments. Only the Catholic Church possesses the original texts.

3. To ensure that a single verse of the Word of God is never misinterpreted, Catholics consider the Holy Bible as a whole. Sola Scriptura has no place in the Catholic Church.

4. Today’s liturgy in the Catholic Church remains unchanged, being as it was when Jesus instituted His Church on earth.

5. The Catholic Liturgy is universal. No matter where you go in the world, the Holy Mass, Baptisms, Marriages, Ordinations, etc… are all administered the same way. This ensure stability and continuity.

6. Catholics are governed by the Canon Law of the Catholic Church that sets the expected standards regarding the administration of the Body of Christ on earth.

7. The faithful are guided by the Catechism of the Catholic Church that contains most of its beliefs and teachings, therefore ensuring uniformity in beliefs and teachings throughout the world.

8. Catholics reject all the false teachings associated with the rapture or the return of Jesus to rule on earth in a physical Kingdom for a period of time.

9. Only the Catholic Church enjoys the ongoing Real physical Presence of Jesus in its Churches. Jesus does not physically dwell in the non-Catholic churches.

10. The Catholic Church is known as the Mother Church. Others churches are known as sister churches to each other.

11. Only the Catholic Church enjoys a leader (Pope) who is a direct descendant of Saint Peter who was appointed by Jesus Himself. [Mt. 16:17-20]

12. Only the Catholic Church possesses the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. [Mt. 16:17-20]

13. Only the Catholic Church enjoys a valid priesthood, each priest having been ordained by apostolic succession.

14. The Catholic Church appoints its priests to parishes. The priests are not elected by a Parish Board of Directors that sets up an interview to determine if a priest’s beliefs harmonizes with their own beliefs.

15. The Catholic Church does not abuse the title of Bishop by appointing a Bishop to every Parish. Catholic Bishops are shepherds to a Diocese that usually embrace a large territory in which is located a large number of Parishes.

16. The Catholic Church administers seven Sacraments as instituted by Jesus Himself.

17. The Catholic Church enjoys the Sacrament of Baptism that gives new life to the soul and admits it into the Body of Christ. Without this Sacrament, one cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

18. The Catholic Church enjoys the Sacrament of Confession, the only means instituted by Jesus to obtain the forgiveness of sins.

19. The Catholic Church enjoys the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist that gives life to those who receive it on a regular basis.

20. The doctrines of the Catholic Church are unchangeable. Example: abortion has always been condemned. Church teachings are not based on the subjective beliefs of individual ministers or their Board of Directors.

21. The Sacred Tradition has an important place in the Catholic Church. During the first 400 years, when there was no Holy Bible, the entirety of Jesus’ revelation was passed on to successive generations by apostolic succession (Sacred Tradition). At a later time, Jesus’ revelation was also passed on by the Bible (Sacred Scripture).

22. The Catholic Church protects the Sacrament of Marriage, only providing an annulment to those whose’s marriage has been proven to be invalid.

23. The Catholic Church shares in the communion of the departed Saints through its membership in the Mystical Body of Christ.

Twelve Things to Remember if the SCOTUS Decision Upsets You

Twelve Things to Remember if the SCOTUS Decision Upsets You

The Marriage of a Man and a Woman in the Roman Catholic Church

The Supreme Court decision allowing gay “marriage” in the United States has upset all right minded Christians, and rightly so.

It is pretty clear that the Supreme Court has rubber stamped a widespread rejection of Christian morality by a large segment of the American people.

Not only has the Supreme Court ratified same sex “marriage” but they have overturned majority opinions of the people, set themselves up as arbiters of human morality, trampled on states’ rights, ignored not only historic Christian teaching, but the understanding of marriage held by all people at all times and in all cultures down through history.

We’re right to be upset. We have the right to protest the decision. Many would say we are obliged to engage in civil disobedience.

OK. But we should also take a deep breath, put things in perspective and keep the faith.

Here are twelve things to remember if you’re not happy with the SCOTUS decision:

1. In our society marriage is in transition – this is not only a question of same sex marriage. For the last fifty years, since the widespread acceptance of artificial contraception, sexuality and therefore marriage has been changing. No fault divorce, co habitation, promiscuity, prostitution, pornography plus increased mobility, feminism, the breakdown of the extended family–all these factors have contributed to the transition. We’re in a storm. Hold on tight. Buckle your seat belts. We’re in for more turbulence, but remember God is still in control. The church is built on a rock. Keep the faith.

2. The decision safeguards religious freedom – I’m inclined to be pessimistic about this and agree with George Weigel and many other commentators who believe that this will be tested before long and religious institutions that disapprove of same sex marriage will be targeted. But let’s hope they’re wrong and there is a strong backlash to strengthen the religious freedom protections. This could happen. Things change for the better as well as for the worse. Pray and hope and thank God that protections of religious freedom are still in place.

3. The battle may be lost, but the war is not over – Supreme Court decisions have been reversed. Constitutional amendments have been made. State legislators can devise new laws to cope with the changing understanding of marriage that grant people freedoms while protecting religious freedom and putting a fence around true marriage. We need to roll up our sleeves and get to work dealing with the situation in positive and creative ways. This includes increased and better catechesis for our families and society and it means a new commitment to our marriages and families.

4. We’re supposed to treat all people with respect and compassion – Not everyone who experiences same sex attraction are radical homosexualists campaigning naked in the streets. People with same sex attraction are not all rabid atheists looking to destroy the church and persecute Christians. We have to put things in perspective and give ourselves a reality check. This doesn’t mean we approve of homosexual actions. It just means we should be thoughtful, aware and intelligent in our responses. We must welcome everyone to the joyful and difficult adventure of following Jesus Christ in the way of charity, chastity and holiness.

5. This is an ecumenical moment – This issue will show us who are true brothers and sisters are in Christ. Conservative evangelicals have stood up for Biblical morality. We can see now that they are our brothers and sisters. The liberal Protestants, on the other hand, have gone the way of the world. This is what usually happens when there is a crisis of persecution or possible persecution: true, Spirit filled disciples of the Lord Jesus suddenly see one another with clarity and charity and they embrace.

6. This will provide a sifting in the Catholic Church – The weeds and the wheat grow together in the Catholic Church. We need to face up to the fact that, according to some polls, a majority of Catholics approve of same sex marriage. These include prominent lay people, priests, deacons and probably some bishops. For a long time we have been papering over the cracks in our church. We’ve kept silent about the things that separate us. We’ve glossed over the differences for the sake of an outward show of unity. As this issue continues to impact the church we will see a sifting. Already I’ve had people leave my parish because I have preached against same sex marriage. Others will go. Many will leave the Catholic Church in disgust. They will have had enough. They may form their own schism or they may join Protestant churches, but the sifting will come and I, for one, think it is a cause for thanksgiving.

7. True Marriage will be strengthened – When something like this happens everything becomes clear for many people. Things were muddy. Things were lukewarm. Things were ambiguous and people were just drifting along. Then when the devil pushes just a bit too far and too fast people wake up. I can see a grass roots movement already emerging in which Christians of all traditions come together to strengthen marriage, strengthen masculinity, strengthen femininity and strengthen marriage. I can see parishes that focus on the family. I can see new communities growing up that focus on the family, and out of this will come a fresh understanding of God’s plan for the human race within the joyful gift of the family.

8. The Sacrament of Marriage Will Shine More Brightly – From this crisis will come a new wave of teaching about the beauty, depth and supernatural sanctity of marriage. This is always what has happened. Read church history. When a truth is challenged by persecution or heresy, by state oppression or moral depravity the truth bounces back ever stronger. When darkness encroaches the light shines ever more brightly. This will happen not because we make it happen, but because that is the very nature of truth and light. Truth and light prevail because they are positive. Darkness and death are negatives. They seem terrible, but they are the absence of life and light and therefore they cannot be sustained.

9. This is a Penitential Moment – The LGBT issue is not an isolated cultural phenomenon. It is part of a larger sexual revolution that has taken place over the last fifty years, and most of us, to a greater or lesser extent have been caught up in this whirlwind. This sexual revolution includes every sin against chastity. All of us should examine our consciences. Have we chosen the easy way of artificial contraception? Have we chosen to be sterilized because we “couldn’t afford more children”? Have we chosen the way of quickie divorce? Re-marriage? Have we turned a blind eye to our kids’ co habitation? Have we attended weddings we knew were illicit just to be nice? Have we used pornography or prostitutes? Have we solved a crisis pregnancy with abortion? Have we watched sex scenes in movies or TV with family members without comment? Most of us have been caught up in the moral maelstrom. It’s time we got our minds and hearts clear and committed ourselves to the fight for chastity.

10. Chastity Will Triumph – Remember the virtue of chastity is not the same thing as celibacy. Celibacy means sacrificing sexual intimacy and marriage for the sake of the kingdom. All are called to chastity. Not all are called to celibacy. Chastity means being faithful in our sexuality to the church’s teaching on marriage. It’s simple: no sex outside marriage. This is not a prohibition to cause us sorrow and pain, but a discipline that leads us to the faithfulness of marriage through which we learn the difficult lessons of love. This is truth. This will triumph as the faithful catch the vision.

11. Remember Humility, Humor and Humanity – Stop and remember to put all things in perspective. The SCOTUS decision is alarming and upsetting. However, do five seriously stupid lawyers really think they can overturn God’s plan for humanity? Get real. When you see it like that it’s a case of the emperor’s new clothes. What they’ve done is dumb. Smile, laugh and rise above it. Even if they tax your business, lock up your priests, scream in your face, burn your churches and send you to jail, laugh and rise above it. Remember Christians sing in prison, joke on the scaffold, are courteous to their torturers, joke with their executioners and wave cheerfully to the crowd as they put their head on the block. Things have been worse. Be of good cheer.

12. Do Not Be Afraid! – I will never forget the first words of Pope St John Paul II as he stepped on to the balcony. “Do not Be Afraid!” This is the constant refrain throughout the gospel. “Do Not Fear!” says the angel to Mary and Joseph. “Do not be Afraid!” says Jesus to the disciples in the boat in the stormy night. “Fear Not!” says the angel of the resurrection. “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind!” says the magnificent St Paul to his young friend Timothy.
