Fr. Anthony Pezzotta, SDB as a young priest
Remember Anthony Pezzotta? He was a Catholic priest from the Salesian of Don Bosco (SDB) who left the priesthood and became a pastor. He wrote an anti-Catholic book Truth Encounter. I had the occasion to refute Chapter 11 of his book. As a Baptist pastor, Anthony Pezzotta debated Catholic apologists like James Akin. Had I been given the chance, I also wanted to debate him. But I couldn’t do that anymore. The guy is dead.
But something happened before he died on March 26, 2014. He received the last rites from a Catholic priest! That’s right. He was given the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick byRev. James Jackson, FSSP. The incident was reported by Fr. Jackson in the parish bulletin of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church (March 30, 2014):
“A kind and zealous lady who works at Cherrelyn Nursing home called me on Wednesday afternoon asking if I could come over to give extreme unction to an old gentleman who was dying and had requested it. She said he had been out of the Church for a long time, and might be more familiar with the traditional rite than the new one. Right before I anointed him she mentioned that he was a priest who had married a Filipino lady outside the Church, and became a Baptist missionary to the Philippines. He was ordained for the Salesians in 1961, and apostatized in 1974, then studied here in town at Denver seminary. He has published many books against the Catholic Faith and is rather famous. At the 11th hour he returned. Do pray for him. His books are distorted and false, and will continue to do damage long after his death.”
The priest anointed Fr. Pezzotta (yes, despite his apostasy, Fr. Pezzotta remains a priest forever!). He was suffering from severe dementia. A traditional priest from the Vatican-approved Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, the priest used the rite in the 1962 liturgical books. When the priest anointed Fr. Pezzotta’s eyes, he closed them and opened after the oil was put on them. When the priest was about to anoint his hands, Fr. Pezzotta opened them.
Thus, it could be asked: Was this cooperation a reversion to the Faith? Or was it some remote or rote memory kicking into gear? Only God can judge. Like the priest who anointed Fr. Pezzotta, I would like to take Fr. Pezzotta’s movement as a sign of God’s mercy.
The priest who anointed Fr. Pezzotta was threatened by a lawsuit by Fr. Pezzotta’s family but none has been filed so far. And Fr. James Jackson doesn’t care a bit. For him, a man was dying who was baptized Catholic. He was called and went immediately. If given the chance, he would do it again. He had a right to that sacrament by virtue of his baptism. Such a pastoral heart of Fr. James Jackson! Truly a priest after the High Priest’s own heart!
I ask my readers to pray for the eternal repose of Fr. Anthony Pezzotta who we hope returned at the 11th hour – truly a testament to the reconciling love and mercy of the Father. I also ask everyone to pray for Fr. James Jackson’s ministry. May God’s Church be blessed by more priests like Fr. Jackson. And may God lead to repentance and conversion priests like Fr. Pezzotta. Jesus, King of Mercy, we trust in you!
The anti-Catholic book authored by Anthony Pezzotta as a Baptist pastor will continue to do damage long after his death. May God have mercy on his soul!
