Long ago in my younger days, I knew of a family who were devout Catholic. When I visited them ten years back, each of the ten siblings were proud of their new found “faith” – one or two claiming different belief from the others . And they were even ready to defend it to the last breath of their lives. Consequently, every time they have family gatherings they would end up debating each other.
Once I asked them why abandon the Catholic faith? And they have common answer: the Bible is the Word of God; and Catholic teaching is not biblical. I feel sad of the situation because they were once instrumental in strengthening back my Catholic faith from indifferentism. It was the mother who nurtured me with Catholic teachings from catechism. But alas! What a surprise! She was converted to other sect simply by the mere issue of the Holy Trinity.
The good Lord, however, has given me wisdom and understanding that led me eventually into the zeal of defending the Catholic truth. In my own little way, but especially by the grace of God, I was able to bring the family back to the Catholic fold after a dialogue using a triple tool namely: 1) the Magisterium, 2) the history and origin of the Bible and 3) the gift of reasoning supported by evidences from history and Bible itself.
Today, how many Catholic souls are victims of wrong information and trickery in manipulating the Bible in their favour and against the Church?I have a handbook entitled “QUICK APOLOGETIC TEXTS ON CATHOLIC FAITH” is a product of long years of meditation and inspiration from bishops and priests who treasured the necessity of apologetic catechesis. This is especially true nowadays that our Catholic faith is maliciously assaulted by anti-Catholic forces. More people are showing no interest to the call of Christian unity which is the main trust of Ecumenism (VAT_II,cf. Eph. 4:3-6).
The call of depending the Catholic faith begun since the Apostolic times (Phil.1:16) not only against spiritual forces of evil (Eph.6:10-18 KJV) but also against false teachings (Gal.1:6-9,2 Pet.2:1-3). Even Christ Himself had not escaped confronting the devil face to face to a debate using the Scriptures as documentary evidence (Mt.4:3-11). This was also true with St. Paul (cf. Acts 18:28). Moreover, in the name of truth we are instructed by St. Peter, our first Pope, “to be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks to give an account for the hope that is in us with gentleness and reverence” (cf. 1 Pet.3:15 -16).
I have been and still is a street preacher and a Radio lay evangelist and appointed Lay Apologist of the Archdiocese of Palo and now the incoming Cardinal of Cebu, Archbishop Jose S.Palma. Those 29 years of experience in actual and personal encounter with Catholic communities and other religious denominations, led me to discover that faithfulness to the Catholic faith alone is not enough (Phil.1:28-30). One has to be truly equipped with full Christian knowledge “to fight for a good fight of faith” (1Tim.6:12) and to contend earnestly for this faith which was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude.1:3). Faith must be reasonably substantiated with organized facts and evidences that can be proven not only historically (Wis.6:22, 8:8,Isa. 41:4 GNB), philosophically (1 Cor.1:26-27), logically (2 Cor.10:4-6), traditionally (2 Thess.2:15; 2 Thess.3:6 KJV) but also biblically (Acts 17:11; Jn.5:39). This is for us to be ready to answer both for those who are truth seekers and people whose intention is simply to malign the dignity of our Church leaders and the sanctity of the church purchased by the precious blood of Christ.
The handbook which is now in the hands of the Editor-Incharge is intended for Lay Ministers, Catechists, BEC Faith communities and evangelizers. Locating in the bible the texts that support the basic fundamentals of our Catholic dogma is made easy. This will truly equip and guide especially Catholic users to sought for biblical quotations whenever questions may arise during the presentation of topical discussions in various gatherings: catechism classes, seminars, dialogue, open forum, bible rallies, etc. This is good also for non-Catholics who are truth seekers, open-minded and honest enough to know the whole truth.
It is my fervent prayer as lay servant that this booklet “QUICK APOLOGETIC TEXTS ON CATHOLIC FAITH” become a useful tool in the daily lives of a Christian serving as aid in the growth towards knowing better and living fuller the Word of God, the Holy Bible.
